Under-tunics are difficult to illustrate, but it is documented from the High Middle Ages that a shirt was worn under the outerwear. This also applies to the Early Middle Ages, as linen shirts are verifiable as burial and undergarments (e.g. in the tomb of Balladoole, Isle of Man). The Vikings liked to wear their shirts close to the body, whereas the slaves were dressed in sack-like garments. It was important that the underwear was still visible when the entire outfit was put on. The fine fabric makes wearing a woolen over-tunic more comfortable, and is a welcome alternative to wool in the summer.

Tolle Ware, guter Preis

Medieval Short Sleeve Tunic Aegir Grey
Medieval Short Sleeve Tunic Aegir Grey
The tunic is a firm and gender-crossing part of fashion from antiquity to modern times. However, it underwent many different variations and meanings over the centuries. Often, for example, the length of the garment indicated the social status of the wearer. While in ancient Rome the nature of the tunic was mostly limited to two rectangular pieces of fabric sewn together at the shoulders, Vikings and Germans wore the garment much less airily with sleeves and often as a combination of under and over tunic against the cold. The short sleeve tunic Aegir gives an imposing appearance both without and with an under tunic, whose effect is further enhanced by the heavy and coarsely woven cotton fabric from which it is made.
